Statement in Relation to the Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is funding in addition to the school's budget. Schools are free to decide how to allocate this funding to best support the raising of attainment for the   most vulnerable pupils. In 2016/17 the school received £239600 pa in Pupil Premium allocations.

Here at Holbrook we want to make sure that children from disadvantaged families achieve the BEST to give them the best possible life chances. Ask any of the children in our school what BEST stands for and they will tell you

Believe in yourself

Be Enthusiastic

Stickablity

Know your Targets

As a result the children are very clear that if they have high expectations of themselves, if they enthusiastic about their learning, if they stick at it and know what they need to improve, they will achieve their goals.

We believe that the best way for all children to make good progress is for their class teachers to have high expectations for their achievement.

The gap in achievement for children who are eligible for the funding continues to narrow because of the hard work of staff, parents and carers and the pupils themselves. We believe that the best way for all children to make good progress is for their class teachers to have high expectations for their achievement, however we also believe that we want ALL children to achieve their potential and therefore continue to seek ways to narrow the gap even more.

This year we have used some of our pupil premium funding to join Achievement for All, an award winning charity that works with schools to transform the lives of children who are vulnerable to underachievement. Achievement for All provides a tailored whole school improvement programme which involves leaders, teachers, parents and carers, pupils and support professionals.

In addition we use the pupil premium funding in a variety of different ways. These include:

  • After school clubs for children to receive extra support for reading writing and/or maths.

  • A specialist teacher of maths to target individual pupils who need additional support, and to provide support to the teaching assistants who run a programme called firstclass@number

  • Every year we run a summer school to develop the children’s confidence and to support their transition into year 6

  • Increased Teaching Assistant support to deliver personalised and group learning programmes and for planning and preparation

  • Increased learning mentor time to support vulnerable children and families and increase pupil attendance/punctuality

  • Teaching assistant dedicated to working with targeted children across the school

  • Additional teaching support targeted at specific year groups

  • Contribution to the funding for breakfast club to support with attendance and well-being

  • Additional teachers to reduce class sizes in Year 5 and 6

  • Contribution to the cost of an Assistant head teacher for each phase of the school to closely monitor the provision and progress of PP pupils in their hubs and to provide direct intervention where appropriate
  • Provision of additional support for children in year 2 who need extra opportunities to read with an adult

  • Buying additional reading resources to ensure pupils have the access to the most up-to–date resources to support their learning

We regularly monitor the impact of the ways we use the funding to make sure it is being used successfully. We review what we do and have the flexibility to make sure we can respond quickly to the needs of the children.
